Reason for Increase in Sky Scrapers

A skyscraper is a continuously habitable high-rise building that has over 40 floors and is taller than approximately 150 m.One common feature of skyscrapers is having a steel framework that supports curtain walls. These curtain walls either bear on the framework below or are suspended from the framework above, rather than resting on load-bearing walls of conventional construction. Modern skyscrapers' walls are not load-bearing, and most skyscrapers are characterized by large surface areas of windows made possible by steel frames and curtain walls. However, skyscrapers can have curtain walls that mimic conventional walls with a small surface area of windows. Modern skyscrapers often have a tubular structure, and are designed to act like a hollow cylinder to resist wind, seismic, and other lateral loads.

Now a days sky scrapers are increasing in urban areas. The main reasons for increase in sky scrapers are people find they are more convenient, they serve to fit a lot of floor space in small area because of their immense height.

This scenarios was created after industrialization. Industrialization created more job opportunities in cities. This led to migration of people from rural areas to cities which in turn led to urbanization. Population in the cities increased prominently, but the space inside the cities were limited. Instead of extending outwards people choose to build multi stored sky scrapers by utilizing available space effectively. The other advantages of sky scrapers are it provide great view to residents, it helps in urban planning and can be effectively used to control population density. It can also be used as a renewable energy by placing solar panels and wind turbines .
